2010…A GREAT YEAR FOR SPORTS…
Well another year comes to a close, as does another interesting and exciting year in sports. There were so many great moments so I will list my favorites chronologically. These are the most interesting, so you know Tiger will get a mention. I also want to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year!!! So with that, away we go.
- The Alabama Crimson Tide started off 2010 by winning their first National Championship since 1992. Nick Saban also became the first FBS coach to win National Championships at 2 different schools, he also won at LSU in 2003.
- Brett Favre threw away yet another chance at going to the Super Bowl when he threw an interception on their potential game tying drive. Favre has continually come up small in NFC championship games. See my prior article for the specifics. Too many to list here!!!

- Drew Brees, here with his son Baylen, and the New Orleans Saints defeated the Colts, and Peyton Manning 31-17 to win Super Bowl XLIV. Drew Brees was named MVP.
- Tiger Woods returns to golf to play at the Masters. Somehow we’ve become so politically correct that when a famous athlete cheats on his wife he needs to apologize to everyone. Tiger needed to apologize to his wife and family, but to me, I don’t think so. I just want to see the best golfer who ever lived return to playing great golf.
- This has to be my favorite image of the year. Two players from the Canada women’s hockey team celebrate winning the gold medal Feb. 25 at the Winter Olympics. The team was criticized for its behavior after the game, which included drinking and smoking cigars on the ice after the victory over the United States. Our sports teams do it all the time, but I guess because they were women people had a problem with it, GO CANADA!!!

- Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette competed through unimaginable pain, capturing hearts all over the world. On Feb. 21, Rochette’s mother died suddenly of a heart attack. Rochette chose to compete in honor of her mother, who, the skater said, had shared her Olympic dreams. Just two days after her loss, a composed and stoic Rochette skated one of the best short programs in her life. With cheers raining down on her from the appreciative crowd, an overwhelmed Rochette finally allowed herself to give in to her grief, melting into tears in the center of the ice. It was one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in Olympic history. Rochette went on to win the bronze medal.
- The Duke men’s basketball team won their 4th Championship under coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Duke men defeated upstart Butler in the final.
- Phil Mickelson’s Masters win meant even more because he shared it with his wife 11 months after she was diagnosed with cancer. “I don’t know if we said anything; we just hugged,” he said. “We just hugged.”
- The Los Angeles Lakers win their second straight NBA Championship as they defeated the Boston Celtics in seven games. It is the Lakers 16th championship, second all time. Coach Phil Jackson won his record 11th title.
- Umpire Jim Joyce, left, shakes hands with Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga on June 3. The previous night, Galarraga lost his bid for a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on an erroneous call at first base by Joyce.
- Staff Sgt. Mikki Skinner, a bugler with the West Point Band, salutes after playing “Taps” during a tribute to New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who died July 13.
- “I’m taking my talents to South Beach,” LeBron James said in his one-hour special on ESPN, “The Decision.” LeBron became the villain for turning his back on his hometown of Cleveland.
- Buster Posey, left, hugs Aubrey Huff as the San Francisco Giants celebrate beating the Texas Rangers in Game 5 to capture the World Series title at Arlington, Texas, on Nov. 1. It was the Giants first Championship since they moved to San Francisco and there first since 1954.
- Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, celebrates after finishing second in the Ford 400 to clinch his fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 21.
- These are just a few of the many images from 2010, and what an interesting year it was. Then again aren’t they all. So here’s to 2011, and let me leave you with this quote, ”Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.”~Benjamin Franklin
