I’ve listened to Mike Francesa since he was on with Chris Russo, and after 15 years of listening there is only one conclusion any rational person can come to, Mike Francesa is an IDIOT!!! He has some good guests, but once he starts taking phone calls he becomes the all knowing King of All Sports. Someone needs to tell him that just because someone has a well thought out opinion that differs from his doesn’t make them wrong. I used to appreciate Mike’s commentary, but that could have been because Russo was the other voice on the show. He wasn’t the sharpest tack in the box, and certainly wasn’t knowledgeable about sports. I guess by default Francesa was the voice of reason on the show. Since Russo left, Francesa has became increasingly arrogant and obnoxious.
Let’s take a look at some of Mike’s can’t miss comments of late. He started in on the Jets last year after they made the playoffs. It wasn’t the Jets fault the Colts infamously decided to rest their players in the 2nd half of their game against the Jets. A game in which the Jets came back and won. A game the Jets needed to win to get in the playoffs. The Colts were 14-0 at the time and had a shot at history. Their general manager Bill Polian made the call to rest his regulars, which was reprehensible in my opinion, but that is a story for another time. Somehow Francesa thought the Jets were lucky and should apologize for making the playoffs. Not only did the Jets make the playoffs, but went to the AFC Championship game, where they ultimately lost 30-17 to the aforementioned Colts. The Jets achieved this with rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez, leading them, and a rookie head coach in Rex Ryan. This was quite an accomplishment for this team and this franchise. The Jets have not experienced much playoff success over the years. Heck, they haven’t been to or won a Super Bowl since Joe Namath led them to their upset of the Colts in 1969. This was a big deal and all Francesa would talk about was how lucky they were. Rex came out and said they should be the favorites and that he believed they were going to the Super Bowl. This is Rex’s way. I understand when people don’t like it or agree with it, but he is trying to change the culture and the expectations of this organization. Francesa criticized them every step of the way. Francesa is a Giant’s guy and is friends with the Maras who own the Giants. The Jets have also refused to allow any of their players to appear on his show. When a commentator continually attacks everything your organization does, why would you make your players available for interviews? Rex’s way worked last year and he deserved more credit than he got. Through the offseason and into this season the rhetoric has remained the same. Francesa criticized the Jets for acquiring Jason Taylor, Antonio Cromartie, and LaDanian Tomlinson. All three have been important pieces on the Jets team this year. Mike actually said Tomlinson would be useless and ineffective. He was the team’s leading rusher and had 80 yards and 2 TD’s in Saturday’s win against the Colts. Jason Taylor had 5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in limited playing time. Cromartie had 3 interceptions and more than held his own while playing opposite Revis, who almost never gets a ball thrown his way. He also had two big kickoff returns in their win Saturday, the second was a 47 yarder that helped set up the game winning field goal. Francesa seems to have forgotten that special teams are a part of the game. He said the Jets were again “lucky” that Cromartie came up with that return. He also said Cromartie was terrible all game long. He did get beat once when he thought he had safety help, other than that he was part of a defense that held Peyton Manning to 16 points. Francesa also felt the need to mention how the Colts didn’t have Dallas Clark and some of their other regulars. The Colts have been playing without Clark for the last 10 games. It’s as if the Colts are the only team with injuries. I guess we need to make excuses whenever Peyton Manning doesn’t win, at least Mike needs to. He also said that if the Jets lost the Colts game, the season would be a failure because Rex said they were going to the Super Bowl. If my coach doesn’t think we are going to the Super Bowl then he should look for another job. It’s as if he feels the Jets haven’t earned anything and deserve no credit. All I know is that the Jets have won 3 playoff games in the last 2 years and counting. Francesa won’t even admit he was wrong on the three players the Jets brought in. The numbers don’t lie.
Mike also has some real issues with many of the baseball and football Hall of Fame elections. Last year I heard a phone call in which the caller was extolling the merits of OL Randall McDaniel for the Hall of Fame. He mentioned how McDaniel had been 12 time Pro Bowler and 7 time 1st Team All Pro. Francesa said, “no he wasn’t.” Yes, Mike he was!!! He argued with someone who was using facts to back up his point of view and Francesa acted as if these FACTS didn’t exist. The caller said McDaniel should get in this year, Francesa said he had no chance, that he wasn’t that good. Sure enough Randall McDaniel was selected for the NFL Hall Of Fame last year. Francesa continues to maintain that Craig Biggio shouldn’t be a Hall of Famer when his time comes. He has 3,000 hits and 1,844 runs scored, that is 13th all time. What exactly is his criteria? These are just a few examples of what has become a theme on his show. He makes up his mind on a topic and ignores all the facts that are contrary to his opinion. That is by definition an idiot, but what do I know?
